Study in the USA – How to get started

For international students, deciding to study in the US is often an overwhelming prospect, with all the paperwork and research one is supposed to get done. However, with some effort and careful planning, you can get things in order and make your dream of getting a US degree come true. Here are some steps to get you going:

First of all, research your choices and zero in on the school that suits your needs; depending on your criteria, you can narrow down your options and apply to the schools you are interested in. Check out the websites of different schools so you can compare and decide on the right one for you. Next, you can think about taking the standardized tests for admission, such as the SAT for undergraduate studies, GRE for graduate school, GMAT for business school and so on. In some cases, you may also have to take a test to prove your proficiency in English, such as the IELTS. Once you get your grades, you can apply to your chosen colleges for admission. Students are often worried about financing their studies; good news is that you can get a significant amount of financial aid from the universities you have applied to, from your home governments or from private sources. You can research financial aid options at the time of applying to colleges in the US.

Once you have been accepted to a school, you can go ahead and apply for a student visa. Before you leave for the US, make sure you have good health insurance, as the US health care system is not only the most advanced, but also the most complex. With a good health insurance plan in place, you will not have to worry about medical expenses in case you suffer from an illness or an injury during your stay in the US.
